A wonderful last-minute test shoot with my new friend Zahra from Detroit, MI. I was connected with this amazing model through the Brooklyn-based agency- Unite-Unite. I had a blast shooting some cinestill800t with her to create some beautiful, bright, and colorful street-style portraits. We shot these on my Leica M5 and Mamiya 645. With beauty so sublime, she’s the best way to spend quality time

CINESTILL 400D? - 35MM PORTRAITS W/ KHALIL

I LOVE shooting Cinestill800t, being both a photographer and a DP I’m biased towards the naturalistic, nostalgic, cinematic images that the film stock is notorious for producing. My only issue, however, is that it’s very difficult to shoot during the day due to its tungsten white balance. The tungsten white balance of the stock makes all the colors shift towards a very unflattering shade of blue while taking photos during daylight hours. So after doing some research I found a very easy workaround: buy an 85B filter and slap it on the front of your lens. This forces the tungsten white balance to shift towards a daylight white balance, meaning it will give more natural colors in sunlight. There is a small trade-off though, unfortunately, you lose a stop of light when using the filter. So it makes the Cinestill800t more like a Cinestill400d in practice.

To test my research out I grabbed my buddy Khalil to shoot some portraits around Bushwick, Brooklyn and I have to say I am VERY pleased with the results. The images came out with a beautiful warm glow that complimented my subject's skin perfectly. And the stock held up very nicely in a variety of different lighting scenarios.

Soft Spot. - A Visual Poem

Soft Spot.” is a visual poem shot by me (logan poe) styled by Jye Leong, and modeled by Morgan Vandermaas. The concept was developed by our stylist, Jye Leong, who wanted to expel some emotion while building a nice piece for his portfolio. I later wrote and revised the written poem to go along with the set of photographs. With my visual poems, I aim to paint a picture of a certain mental state or emotional state through the pieces as a whole. This one is titled “Soft Spot.”

Soft spot for the ones who love to run away,

An addiction to escapism that remains commonplace,

Summer spent fast, dreams of summer love in London,

Shared shattered pasts over cigarettes after sex,

Still have a spot for that blonde hair, those black lungs,

Green eyes that almost broke gravity,

Till smoke faded the boundaries that now bind us still,

With an unspoken understanding of an invisible clock,

And an unrealistic, yet romantic thought.

I’ve been putting my new Leica M5 through its paces and its holding up really well in a variety of situations. This time I sought to test the Leica’s ability to shoot using wireless Godox trigger at a Peerspace located in Brooklyn, new york. I was originally worried that with a slow sync speed of 1/50th that the M5 would prove troublesome when trying to shoot with strobes, but my anxieties subsided after getting the images back from thesmalldarkroom. Everything came out sharp with minimal to negligible amount of motion blur.

The concept of the shoot and styling was done by my model, Sofia Quizaire, whose a model and dancer also based in Brooklyn. It was nice being challenged to shoot something other than my normal go-to streetwear and streetstyle concepts. As, Ive found that collaborating with other creatives and trading ideas is the best easy to expand my own creativity.

My New Workhorse: The Leica M5

I recently bought a camera I’ve been eyeing since I was 15, the most controversial Leica: the Leica m5. And I truly believe it's only controversial to like this camera because it doesn't have that legendary red dot on the front. In truths, it feels like an M6 for people who have bigger hands and don't like to rely on batteries. No, it doesn't have a classic “Leica look” to it, but I kinda like that. I LOVE the modern styling, font, and color of my M5 aid in maintaining a classy low profile.

To test it out I shot a roll of HP5 with my buddy Kosi Agyeman around the financial district of manhattan. The photos turned out amazing. I couldn't be happier with the set. I used a Nokton 35 1.4 Classic for this set.

Studio Documentation with LilKey and Rome (Portra 400)

Recently I was invited to document a studio session at the Penthouse studio located in Manhattan, New York. My long-time friend Rome sent the invite last minute but I glad he did. I ended up photographing Lil Key, a Baltimore-based artist who Rome manages. Was fun shooting some film for these guys, shot a roll of Portra with my Nikon N80 & Sigma Art 35.

Notes:

As usual, it’s always easier to complete a project when you have a good team behind you. This was one of my first commissioned projects I shot entirely on film which was nerve-wracking but it ended up working out just fine. The 35mm was shot on Lomography 400, and the 120 was Portra 400. I’ve found that Lomo 400 works the best on the Nishika. I believe a match due to the Nishika’s toy camera feel combined with Lomo 400’s original purpose, as the stock derives from old Kodak point and shoot film.
